More than one hundred years after the Statute of the Italian Regency of Carnaro, the Constitution drafted by poet Gabriele D’annunzio for the city-state of Fiume remains a document of remarkable contemporary relevance. This paper examines its provisions, with the aim of relating them to the major themes of modern law, such as labor and property, subsidiarity and decentralization, coexistence with diversity in an era of mass migration, the relationship between power and individuality, the valorization of historical roots, and the conception of the future.
